MFT Licensure in Idaho: What Associate MFTs Need to Know About Supervision
Idaho requires 2,000 hours of client contact, 1,000 of them conjoint, and 200 hours of supervision from a board-approved supervisor. What associates need to know.
Idaho sets one of the higher client contact requirements among the states I'm licensed in, with a large share of relational work. This guide covers what Idaho requires of associate MFTs and a pending rule change worth watching.
Idaho's Board of Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists operates under the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). The figures below come from IDAPA 24.15.01, checked in October 2026. Confirm current requirements with the board before you plan your hours.
The Requirements
Pre-licensed title: Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. The associate license requires the national MFT exam (IDAPA 24.15.01.100.03).
Client contact: 2,000 hours of post-graduate direct client contact, at least 1,000 of them conjoint, meaning sessions with two or more people in an ongoing relationship (100.04.c).
Supervision: 200 hours, at least 100 of them individual, over at least two years. At least 100 supervision hours must be with an LMFT. Individual supervision means no more than two supervisees with one supervisor, and group supervision means three or more.
A Pending Change
A pending rule published by DOPL in August 2026 would reduce the supervision requirement to 100 hours, 50 of them individual, all supervised by an LMFT. Its effective date wasn't confirmed when this guide was written. If you're early in your hours, check which version will apply to your application.
Who Can Supervise
Idaho requires board approval of supervisors. An approved supervisor is an LCPC or LMFT who has completed 15 hours of supervision training and has no discipline in the past five years (IDAPA 24.15.01.200). The supervisor must be approved in the state where the supervisee practices.
Video Supervision
The board's MFT supervised experience form has separate entries for in-person hours and hours by live electronic connection, which indicates the board accepts live electronic supervision. The rule text doesn't address it directly, so confirm with the board if your supervision will be mostly remote.
Planning Your Hours
- Track conjoint hours separately from the start, since half your client contact must be conjoint
- Confirm your supervisor's board approval before your first session
- Log supervision by format (in person or live electronic) using the board's form
- Watch the pending rule and confirm which supervision requirement applies to you
Supervision in Idaho
Associate MFTs in Idaho often practice where affirming supervisors are scarce, and queer and trans clinicians may be the only ones in their area doing this work. Remote supervision can close that distance.
I hold an active Idaho LMFT license. See the Idaho supervision page for current availability, or request a session.
